Overlook Beach Trail

Overlook Beach Trail, a relatively short trail, can be seen almost entirely from the upper viewing deck. Cross 0.25 mile of wind-polished sand to the deflation plain. On a windy day, the deflation plain is a refuge with the dense growth of trees and wetland plants deflecting the frequent seasonal winds. European beachgrass and 20 other species of plants announce the transition from wetland to foredune. Top the crest, and the isolated beach beckons. This is a good beach to look for rare, whole sand dollars. Portions of the foredune may be restricted from March 15 – September 15 to protect the Western Snowy Plover,a threatened shorebird. Obey the signs and give these birds the opportunity to nest in peace. The Overlook was developed to highlight this particularly scenic area of the Oregon Dunes. Two trails, this and the Tahkenitch Creek Trail, explore the contrasts of the coastal rain forest, dramatic open dunes, surprising wetlands and pristine ocean beach. Facilities at the Overlook include flush toilets, potable water, picnic tables, interpretive signs, and viewing platforms. The restrooms and picnic tables are fully accessible.
