On The Way
To Crater Lake
The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway takes visitors through the scenic communities of Rocky Point on Klamath Lake, Chiloquin and Klamath Falls on its way from Crater Lake National Park to Mt. Lassen and Lava Bends National Monument in Northern California. There are many places to stay on the way as you zipline, birdwatch, mountain bike or just enjoy the peaceful wonders of Klamath County.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more perfect Southern Oregon location for so many unforgettable outdoor activities than Union Creek Resort – a favorite of author Zane Grey. Union Creek is located on Highway 62 right on Wild & Scenic Rogue River amongst hiking trails and waterfalls just minutes from Crater Lake National Park -- and across the road from the best pies in Oregon at Beckie's Cafe.
Only 45 minutes from the Crater Lake Rim on Highway 62, the historic Prospect Hotel & Dinner House was a stop for stage coaches and has housed noted dignitaries such as Theodore Roosevelt, Zane Grey, Jack London and William Jennings Bryan on their way to Crater Lake. The Dinner House has been written up in Sunset magazine as "the best Dinner House between Medford and Crater Lake."
Diamond Lake Resort, at the base of dramatic Mt. Thielsen has evolved from a small fishing lodge built in the 1920s, to a modern family resort that offers year-round service. It is a favorite summer spot for fishing, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding. In the winter it is famous for skiing, snowboarding and tubing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.
