Oregon’s Outback

Discover Lakeview & Lake County: Oregon’s High Desert Adventure

If you’re craving wide-open skies, dramatic desert scenery, and a pace that slows to match the rhythm of the wind, it’s time to point your wheels toward Lakeview — the “Tallest Town in Oregon.” Tucked into the Goose Lake Valley near the California border, Lakeview is your gateway to the Oregon Outback, a rugged landscape of rimrock cliffs, hot springs, pronghorn antelope, and some of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see.

This isn’t the Oregon of rivers and redwoods — it’s the other side of Oregon donned with sagebrush, solitude, and stars.

The Road Less Traveled

The drive to Lakeview feels like a journey back in time. As you leave the forests of the Cascades behind, the trees thin, the sky expands, and the horizon stretches for miles. Rolling into Lakeview, you’ll notice how the town feels both remote and welcoming — a true frontier community with a proud western spirit.

Whether you’re coming from the south or looping in from Medford or Grants Pass, the route itself is part of the reward. Every mile delivers something new — deep canyons, unexpected waterfalls, or herds of antelope grazing under a big desert sky.

As you make your way toward Lakeview, consider taking the Oregon Outback Scenic Byway—a breathtaking route that showcases the region’s rugged charm. Stretching for over 170 miles, this byway traverses dramatic lava beds, ancient lakes, and wide-open rangelands, giving travelers a front-row seat to the landscape’s raw beauty. Along the way, you’ll encounter unique geological formations, quiet small towns, and plenty of opportunities to pull over and soak in the solitude and scenery. It’s the perfect introduction to the high desert’s allure, setting the stage for your adventure in Lake County.

Soak, Hike, and Stargaze

Start your visit at some of the area’s signature experiences: Neon Cowboy Roadhouse + Hot Springs, just north of town, where the desert floor releases its hidden heat — a natural geothermal spa where the famous geyser Old Perpetual once erupted every 90 seconds. Even if the geyser is quiet these days, the springs still offer that wonderfully surreal high-desert experience.

When night falls, the show moves overhead. Lake County is part of the vast region being recognized as the world’s largest International dark Sky Sanctuary, a premier stargazing destination. Remote, high-desert terrain and minimal light pollution create perfect conditions to see the Milky Way blaze from horizon to horizon.

Explore the Wild Heart of Oregon’s Outback

If adventure calls, you’re in the right place. From Lakeview, it’s easy to reach some of Oregon’s most striking and least-crowded landscapes:

Each site has its own kind of magic — and its own sense of solitude. You’ll want to bring extra water, a paper map (cell service is patchy out here), and a spirit of curiosity. If you’ve got an extra day, venture north to Christmas Valley to explore Fossil Lake or the sand dunes — one of the only places in Oregon where you can feel like you’re in the Sahara.
